Archelle Georgiou
Dr. Archelle Georgiou is a Senior Fellow of the Center for Health Transformation (CHT) and a well-recognized leader in healthcare with a passion for empowering individuals to be responsible healthcare consumers. Dr. Georgiou currently consults with large organizations to design and execute integrated strategies that promote simplicity and effectiveness in the healthcare system. Her expertise is focused on consumer-centered care and leveraging communication, information and technology to influence decisions and buying behavior. Dr. Georgiou spent the last 12 years as an executive with UnitedHealth Group. From 1999-2002, Dr. Georgiou served as chief medical officer and developed the business and clinical strategy that replaced medical necessity review with a new health management system. Designed to improve care and reduce cost by proactively meeting patient’s healthcare needs, this new medical management model, Care Coordination™, drove a major change in the managed care industry. In 2002, Dr. Georgiou used this clinical model to establish a new business unit in UnitedHealth Group, where she served as CEO.
Most recently, Dr. Georgiou was executive vice president of strategic relations with OptumHealth, a specialty health and well-being segment of UnitedHealth Group. Dr. Georgiou worked with product and technology development teams to help ensure that initiatives were aligned with emerging themes and trends in the healthcare industry and designed to meet the evolving needs of payers, clinicians and consumers. Dr. Georgiou also served as medical advisor to United Health Foundation.
Dr. Georgiou currently serves on the board of directors for WomenVenture and the Society for Women’s Health Research. She is on the advisory board for Misys Healthcare System’s Center for Community Health Leadership. Dr. Georgiou conducts a regular healthcare segment on Fox TV News in the Twin Cities. She is frequently invited to speak at healthcare industry and consumer forums on the topics of personal health records and integrated healthcare delivery models. She has been invited to testify as an expert witness in Congress and speak at the World Bank and the United States Department of Defense. Dr. Georgiou spent the first five years of her career practicing internal medicine in Northern California.
