CHT Founder Newt Gingrich participated in a Press Briefing at the National Press Club where Jackson Healthcare released a Gallup Poll of physicians on the practice of defensive medicine. This is the first nationwide study of physicians on defensive medicine. All other studies have been based on claims data which does not reveal the medical appropriateness of the test or procedure.

Defensive medicine is defined as the practice of diagnostic or therapeutic measures conducted not to ensure the health of the patient or to assist in the diagnosis or treatment of the patient, but as a safeguard against possible malpractice liability. This may include tests, procedures, prescriptions, hospitalizations and referrals that may not be medically necessary, but are viewed as providing protection from a potential lawsuit.
