Healthy Pets and Healthy People

The Healthy Pets and Healthy People initiative is dedicated to accelerating the adoption of transformational solutions and policies related to pets. The initiative recognizes, communicates and promotes the connection between pet ownership and the health of the people who own them.

Our focus is to expand and protect pet ownership in five primary areas where pets can make substantial contributions to health and wellness:
  • Seniors;
  • People with chronic diseases;
  • People with disabilities;
  • Optimal health and wellness of the general population, including mental health;
  • Health and homeland security.
Through building a collaboration of private and public sector leaders, our goals are two-fold:

  1. To improve the health of people through strengthening, protecting and advancing their ability to benefit from responsible pet ownership; and
  2. To expand pet adoption, with the goal of eliminating the killing of adoptable animals.

I have several cats who were abandoned by their owners ... not the cats fault .. but VETS have siezed upon the idea of 'get-rich-quick' and raised their rates astronomically!! [sp ??!!] We give all of our pets their annual shots and feed with great care!! Even the two German Shepherds recieve monthly grooming and baths ... all of our small friends are well cared for .. but I need to know of a Vet in my area who is affordable!!I live about 8 miles out of Merced, CA in a small area beween Planada and LeGrand, CA.

My personal health provider is Health Net -of California. When I began the policy it cost $236.00 per month. Now because of my age [63] it is up to a whopping $907.00 per month!! I use my RX for only 1 prescription per month - Hydrochlorothizide [sp??]- a water pill .. [$6.68 per month] I haven't found another carrier for less!! ...and because I was diagnosed with ADEM seven years ago [that's the West Nile Virus - when it wasn't supposed to be here, yet!!] .. and I am still alive!! [1 out of ??] .. and I am not unconsious!![1 out of ???]..and I am regaining my strength and mobility more every day. [1 out of ??] My Health carrier gives me a happy birthday gift every year by raising my rates at least $100.00!! ... per month!! I understand the business principle behind their accounting procedures .. but at age 65 the policy will be automatically canceled!! .. so where are the up front benefits for what I am paying?? ... at 65 I will be on Medicare and probably I will pick up a seperate insurance assistance policy through AARP ... like I have my husband on now. [He's 72] ... bit, I really am irritated at the excessive rate I have to pay ... just because 'I chose to live' and was 'blessed by God' to 'be allowed' to do so!! ... I jusy don't understand !! Help!!
