American Federation of Labor - Congress of Industrial Organizations' Healthcare Reform Proposal


The following summary was derived from information released by the AFL-CIO Executive Council:

AFL-CIO's plan would achieve universal coverage by expanding Medicare. The plan would:

  • Provide Americans with comprehensive, affordable coverage
  • Allow unions and employers to continue to play a role and retain the ability to supplement coverage
  • Allow individuals the ability to select their own doctors and other health care providers
  • Finance the healthcare system through shared responsibility
  • Create a “level playing field” for all businessess
  • Establish cost-control measures, such as requiring information on provider performance and enhancing efficiency
  • Invest in systems and technology to reduce medical errors and costs, streamline administration and promote best practices
