ORLANDO-- Newt Gingrich is blasting the Democratic health care bill as a big government plan that will drive up the cost of insurance, not lower it.
“They want to raise fees on wheelchairs, on hearing aids. I mean, how can you say you want less expensive health care, so if you need to buy a wheelchair, we're going to tax you for it,” Gingrich said. “And, it's almost like this bill - the only goal of this bill is to create the biggest possible government with the largest amount of government money.”
The bill would require most Americans to carry health insurance. Democrats say that will lower prices.
To hear it from Gingrich, the Democrats’ health care reform plan will almost certainly be a catastrophe.
In his mind, the key could be what’s happening right now in Florida. Gingrich says Gov. Crist’s insurance coverage in Florida is a good example of what to do.
“Unlike what Washington is doing, going through the roof with their spending, you can get reasonable, good health coverage in Florida for a nominal price, and that's a good thing,” Crist said. Whether that’s a good thing for the entire country, Gingrich didn’t say.
He does say our health care system needs reform.
“What we're trying to do right now is finance a broken system that is very expensive. And, that becomes a downward spiral, 'cause the system, frankly, will absorb as much money as you give it,” Gingrich said.
His prediction is the Democratic plan will pass, but it won’t work.
Gingrich argues fixing the health care system will take more personal responsibility. He says Americans need to exercise more and eat healthier to help prevent serious problems.
Gingrich also wants doctors and hospitals to cut costs by using new technologies.
