Vision Service Plan [VSP] Vision Care Project

VSP’s goal is to provide 2,000 free eye exams and materials to the public.  In addition to the free eye exams, they will also provide free blood pressure, glucose screenings, and BMI measurements.  If after the eye screening, VSP finds a patient with retinal changes based on previous eye exam measurements, retinopathy in diabetic patients with no primary care provider, they will refer the patient to the Columbus Research Foundation for further measurements which include: HDL, LDL, hemoglobin A1c, blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, triglycerides, and a measurement of waist circumference.  Once CRF screens the patients, they will make recommendations for people to see their primary care physician (PCP). If the patient does not have a PCP, they will be given a list of NCQA certified physicians.  Initial results from this project are supporting that that private-practice optometry can be a non-traditional channel to find diabetes, hypertension, and metabolic disorders at the earliest possible opportunity.
