Center Founder Newt Gingrich Speaks About Health Reform at ALEC's Annual State and Nation Policy Summit

On December 5, 2008, Center founder Newt Gingrich addressed attendees of the American Legislative Exchange Council's State and Nation Policy Summit in Washington, DC.

Gingrich’s luncheon keynote address focused on the current political climate and what improvements can be made as the country progresses forward, as related to state budgets, jobs and the economy, education, healthcare.

On the healthcare front, Gingrich focused on four main points for state legislators to take back to their states:
  • Insist that doctors and hospitals within each state must move to best practices to lower cost and improve outcomes
  • Take efforts to reduce fraud within the healthcare system
  • Move to incentivized systems, in which patients are rewarded for compliant behavior
  • Look at community-based models as ways to make change rapidly and in an impactful way
