David Merritt Participates in "Electronic Health Records: Can Policymakers Promote Progress and Protect Privacy?," sponsored by Dittus Communications

Date: July 18, 2007

Location: Washington, DC

Project Director David Merritt participated in a panelist discussion on "Electronic Health Records: Can Policymakers Promote Progress and Protect Privacy?” an event sponsored by Dittus Communications. The event brought together healthcare experts to discuss the growing need for medical privacy rules as the United States moves toward greater use of HIT to store health records.

While some panelists called on the federal government to create a set of privacy standards, Merritt called for a public and private partnership to create such standards.

"The government is really good at creating commissions and creating advisory boards ... and studying an issue," Merritt noted. "What the government is not good at, and what we shouldn't ask it to do, is to lead and to act."
